What do you need to know about the product stretch film?

Is there a concept of “the best” stretch film? In fact, no, because every application, each company needs a different stretch film, tailored to the specifics of the loads and pallets with which it works. Of course, there are many common properties between different stretch films, but there are many details and features that need to be taken into account when choosing the optimal stretch film for your application. This is why the term best is relative and is actually based on your goals, working conditions, and expectations.
Thickness, trans-stretch properties, puncture and tear resistance, retention force, and other performance criteria are examples of characteristics to consider when choosing stretch film.

Types of stretch film, according to production technology

There is a major difference in the technologies of stretch film production, so we will try to make it clear. On one hand, we have cast stretch film, which accounts for over 70% of the film used worldwide, and on the other hand, it is the so-called blown stretch film, which holds about 20-30% of the stretch film market.
In both processes, production begins with the main raw material for production – granular LLDPE (linear polyethylene with low density polyethylene). The stretch film is very often multi-layered and includes various supplements that improve individual characteristics. It can be colored; it can be more sticky or resistant to UV rays and others.
In general, extrusion is a process in which, after heating and melting, polyethylene is passed through a matrix of different shape, after which a film of equal thickness is obtained, which is cooled and passes to the next stages – unrolling, cutting to size, winding on spools and preparation for despatch.

Cast stretch film is produced through the so-called cast extrusion process. The production process itself contributes to the ideal transparency of this type of stretch film and the ability to see the products packaged with it. This stretch film is very quiet when unrolled and stretches much easier; it has a natural stickiness, which if necessary can be further improved on the inside or outside of the stretch film. And while cast stretch film has these advantages, plus a better price, it can’t be compared to the retention and puncture resistance inherent in blown stretch film. Another weakness of this type of stretch film is that although it is easier to stretch because it has a lower density, it does not have such a pronounced tendency to restore its length after stretching, the so-called stretch memory.

Advantages:

– It is cheaper than blown stretch film
– Much more widely used
– Much clearer and more transparent, so customers can see the packеd products.
– Much quieter to unroll than blown stretch film.
– It is sticky on both sides, which helps for the stability of the pallet.

Disadvantages:

– It does not possess the strength and the retaining power of the blown stretch film
– Lower resistance to tearing and puncture compared to blown stretch film

Blown stretch film is produced through the so-called blown extrusion process. The process itself, and in particular the cooling stage, predetermines the exceptional strength and elasticity of this type of stretch film. As blown stretch film is much stronger than other types of film, it also has significantly higher resistance to puncture and tearing. This is an important advantage when it comes to loads with sharp edges that can pierce lower density films. This type of stretch film has a much more pronounced property to restore its length after stretching, which provides a much stronger package. But despite the advantages of this stretch film, the more complex production process leads on the one hand to a higher price, and on the other hand – to a much lower transparency of the stretch film. In addition, the blown stretch film is much noisier when unrolled.

Advantages:

– It has much higher strength and restraining force
– Has a stronger tendency to recover its length after stretching, providing a stable and durable package.
– The higher elasticity and resistance to drilling makes it suitable for loads with sharp edges.

Disadvantages:

– Higher price caused by higher production costs.
– Low transparency due to crystallization in the production process.
– Quite noisy when unfolding

There is also another type of stretch film that we would like to mention – the so-called pre-stretch film. As a presentation, it is to some extent positioned between the cast and the blown stretch films. Essentially, it is a blown stretch film that is pre-stretched to about 90% of the maximum possible stretching. Hence the advantages of the standard blown stretch film. The thickness of the pre-stretch film is lower than traditional films, but it is extremely strong. It requires much less tensile force from the operator. Other important advantages are:

– Lower stretch film consumption – lower cost of packaging.
– Faster and easier packaging – saves time and money.
– Strong tendency to regain its length after stretching.
